I’m Valencia bound to the Benicassim festival for a dose of sun stroke, alcohol poisoning, and hopefully fine music.
Normal service may resume on my return, but first another crusty old edition of Coldcut’s Solid Steel radio show.
Back roughly 15 years for the classic Junior Reid sampling “Blood Vibes” from the Masters At Work, some shameless self publicity with Ninjatune’s Raggadelic Roots, and an old school Reggae ending courtesy of Marley, The Wailing Souls and Aswad. Crammed in between, a Coldcut R&S megamix, and a bit of lefty politics, “Privatise The Air” from Gary Clail and the Barmy Army, that’s as relevant in Gordon’s Britain as it was back in 1992.
June was the month that… I totally neglected this blog. Must try harder.
Windmill
Newport Pagnell is best known for its service station, parchment, and at a push a very old Iron bridge. That’s set to change as Pagnell is the unlikely home of Matthew Thomas Dillon who under the guise of “Windmill” has released a contender for album of the year.
“Puddle City Racing Lights” took a while to burrow itself into my skull, but over the last couple of months its gradually become my most played by far.
I’ll describe it a bit more soon but I have to dash so I’ll leave you with an MP3, and a Youtube of the breathtakingly good new single “Fit” - Buy both now :).
“Puddle City Racing Lights” - Buy it immediately from Amazon or the album and the last single from Piccadilly.
Glastonbury
Charlie Brooker’s wonderfully curmudgeonly review of his first and last Glasto experience had me in stitches: Read it in full here.
“the headline acts weren’t due till Friday, but already there were sound systems and bands and people banging musical pots together. Yet in the midst of so much choice, I had focus. I knew what I wanted to do. Leave.”
