As time ticked by towards the 30th anniversary of their seminal UK cut-up classic ‘Say Kids, What time is it?’, I’d reluctantly begun to accept that Matt Black and Jonathan More aka Coldcut may never release another track. Then, as UKIP knocked seven bells out of each other in Strasbourg, Coldcut casually dropped ‘Only Heaven’, their first new music in a decade!
It was way back in 2008 that Matt & Jon first announced they were working with producer Dave Taylor (Switch / With You) on a follow up to 2006’s ‘Sound Mirrors’ LP so it’s not clear if ‘Only Heaven’ – which was recorded at Woodshed Studios in Malibu, California – is from those sessions or more likely a more recent collaboration. Either way it’s a Ninja love in with Thundercat on bass and Coldcut reuniting with the ultimate Big Dada Roots Manuva MC.
Coldcut were my favourite band, DJ, VJ, producers and radio show all rolled into one. As a teenager they were my John Peel, opening my eyes to a world of music that crossed every genre and country. Their explorations into gaming and interactive video inspired me, and played a large part in my career – I even interviewed Matt as part of my degree dissertation on ‘Interactivity, music and video’. This blog wouldn’t exist without them but let’s not blame them for that 😉
Anyway long story short I’m very pleased to have them back!
On Facebook they say “new CC material of various types is being readied for release” and that “audio is always combined with visual – and with politics. The duo have been working with RCA students and alumna Kim Rugg to re-imagine cultural activism in an ongoing program“. And not forgetting the vinyl heads there are physical copies on the way too.
Also making a return last month were Bogus Order, creators of Zen Brakes Vol. 1. Coldcut relaunched their original Ahead Of Our Time label – 25 years since the last release.
