Ask me tomorrow what my favourites are and ill have changed my mind or remembered a classic that somehow escaped my thoughts. Loving a piece of music depends so much on where you hear it, whats happening in your life or who you’re with. There are tracks that only feature because they seem to work particularly well when played repeatedly at volume while pummelling up the M6 late at night.
Its a personal selection at pray to my whims, if Im in love ill overload the chart with slush, break my heart and ive a terrible weakness for Country and Western. Quite what putting an experimental Norwegian Jazz collective at No.1 says on that front is probably best glossed over.

Hopefully somewhere among this ridiculously long list there might be one artist you’d never heard before but will go on to love in 2011. Regardless of their order everyone of these 200 pieces of music has something very special about it.

The buzz around Obaro Ejimiwe aka Ghostpoet built slowly but inevitably in 2010. His soft, sleepy, dulcet tones first came to my attention via blogging stalwarts Cubikmusik & Jus’Likemusic, then in February at The Worldwide Awards his performance was so packed, security had to enact a strict policy of one in, one out (unfortunately I never got beyond out).
Gilles Peterson was just one of the people spellbound by Ghost’s everyday tales, sonorous delivery and mix of wonky beats, hiphop & electronica, snapping him up for his Brownswood imprint.
“To Something”, his unofficial mix of Fourtet’s “She Just Likes To Fight” featuring another up-and-comer Rox is a new high watermark. Absolutely beautiful. Count the days to his debut album.

In a flagrant abuse of the one song per artist rule I’m opting for three Akira The Don related tracks at No.14.

Back in May Akira’s website went up in smoke after his ATD 23 Streetfighter tribute mixtape was declared “The Best Gaming Mixtape You’ll Ever Hear” by the ludicrously popular gaming site Kotaku.com. In the name of adding to the buzz, my dulcet tones could be heard on Hype Machine Radio enthusing about standout track “Be Brave”. Shortly afterwards an unholy alliance of MLD and ATD’s twitter followers propelled the tune to the top of the Hype Machine chart.

Every generation has a Weller song to call its own whether its by The Jam, Style Council or the Modfather’s “Wildwood” era. The glorious 8 minute Northern Soul swirl of Leo Zero’s “No Tears To Cry” remix may just be the track that bewitches a fresh generation.
Leo Zero’s Dub Psychedelic Series previously sprinkled magic onto 70′s Bowie, and his Weller mix is a subtle triumph. On Soundcloud Leo was modest about his input “I can’t take credit for any of the parts! – I just did a beef-up and added some drums… the original is actually constructed with a lot of separate samples, I was very surprised when I cracked it open – it sounds so live, I thought it was all original“.

He was also understandably excited to be offered the chance to work on Weller’s material:

“A remix for Paul Weller that was a real honour ( and a lot of fun) to do. I think of this sound as what was going on at Blackpool’s Mecca Ballroom on the Northern Soul scene – slightly disco-fied…. but this track also reminds me of Neil Diamond and Glen Campbell – it’s a truly great song, and I was literally jumping round the studio with excitement when I first heard it! It was one thing to land a Paul Weller mix after being a fan for so long, but then to find out it was for such a belter of a song was mindblowing”.

“Permanent Midnight”

“Blakula” an imaginary soundtrack to the tale of a black vampire born in Haiti, hibernated in Transylvania and defrosted in New York City in 1977. Its nothing to do with the 1972 Blacula (with a c) film which had its own collectable blaxsploitation soundtrack.
Theres an amusing backstory of Blakula’s adventures on the New York scene, writing poems with Burroughs, jamming with Miles and the Velvet Underground, shaking a canister for Basquiat and his tail feather with Warhol.

The album takes in rock, prog, disco, jazz but melds it all into one glorious voodoo funk soup that the Italian duo Simon Maccari and Andrea Bellentani aka The Diaphanoids should be justly proud.

A live favourite, and the perfect blend of old style Hip-Hop with a little Go-Go – its like Shady Grove are back on stage. The Beat sounds very very nice.

“This Is A Lull”

A slice of pure pop dance so blissful that Kylie herself would crawl over hot coals to get her mitts on it. “This Is A Lull” would fit daytime Radio 1 perfectly, but equally it’s pulsing synths and 80′s snare hits make it more than cool enough for the trendier dancefloor.
It works even better when twinned with one of Run Toto Runs inventive videos – this time its all trippy motion effects (watch below). To show how they created it, the director Christopher Poole has released footage of the band performing to a super slowed down version of the tune, which when sped creates the otherworldly effect. An ipod inspired musical version of attention deficit disorder killed my album listening habits – Twitter, Facebook, MP3′s by the thousand, iplayer, youtube… Its hard enough to hold my attention for one song, let alone a whole LP!

Mondkopf’s “Galaxy Of Nowhere“ was one of a handful of exceptions in 2010. An album I can listen to from track 1 to 12 without my finger even hovering over “next” – ridiculous though that problem is.

Perhaps the 23 year old Parisian just ticks all the right boxes for me? Eno influences, crunching beats, large synths but most of all wonderfully BIG orchestration! Lovely.

Wind down the car windows and sing along to the likes of “To make it look like a global conspiracy, to hold the people down and keep them in poverty“.

Its also two tunes for the price of one as 2 and a half minutes in the vocals disappear and it heads off on a glorious 4 minute sax led instrumental excursion! If you like this be sure to check out his debut long player “Burning Melody“.

Musically its a world away from Shirley (Youtube) with a huge squelching synth throb, Jones’ vocal clicks and a generally ominous tone. Not a skipping rope in sight but fantastic nevertheless.

Hello there. For 15 years the comforting sweep of Heather “The Weather” Reid’s arm over the map of Scotland brought news of what the skies had in store for the day ahead.
When she left, Reporting Scotland marked the occasion with all the solemnity and imagination a TV producer can summon, ie a montage of clips set to Crowded House’s “Take The Weather”.
Thankfully at the time Randan Discotheque’s Craig Coulthard was questioning his decision not to follow migrated friends to London and stick with Edinburgh. In Heather he saw “a certain homeliness and familiarity, a humble attraction” perhaps a symbol of the Scotland his friends must surely regret leaving behind.
In truth the friends were probably far too busy living it up on the streets of Shoreditch to pine for anything but nevermind the resulting song is a delight – shot through with a dose of melancholy, its a wistful paean to Heather Reid and by extension Scotland itself.

It also like Mike Powell flying through the air to break Bob Beamon’s heart, wrestles the crown for “best ever weather presenter based song” from The Tribe Of Toff’s “John Kettley is a Weatherman” …and so is Michael Fish.

The single is available to buy digitally now or on 7″ in early December and is backed by an equally fine track about Armenian cannibals and a siege during the Spanish Civil War. One of the things that mark Randan Discotheque out from the crowd is their idiosyncratic choice of tone and subject. While its unlikely any other band would release a single about an edition of a Scottish newspaper “Daily Record, May 19th 1993″, they’re not averse to something approaching a tender love song – witness “I’d Like To Be Alone”.

While normally I’d rejoice at a rare failure for Rupert Murdoch’s pernicious empire, the humbling of Myspace by the all conquering Facebook left a huge gap for a social network with music at its core. Facebook does throw up occasional musical treasures, but it relies on the vagaries of your friends musical tastes. You have to plough through a lot of “Im watching X-factor/here are my holiday snaps” to get a few gems like Godzilla Black’s sleaze metal take on Prince Get Off.

Video hosting sites can also do a reasonable job of introducing new music, a look at Randan Discotheques channel reveals the Edinburgh act “Pet”, who are supporting Randan at the Heather The Weather single launch gig.  A video featuring a bearded man getting a shave may not sound especially enthralling but “Yes Way” does just that with a charm and humour that perfectly fits the song.

Over on Randan’s Vimeo page a quick look at favourite videos reveals a lovely slice of South African Shangaan dance music. The video may look like something filmed by The Apprentice candidates during their Westfield shopping centre task but its both charming and more importantly, what a tune!

Perhaps the true heir to Myspace as the music centred Social Network of choice is Soundcloud. It may be hideously expensive to host more than a couple of hours of music on, but as a tool for “consumers” to find new sounds it hits the nail on the proverbial head.
The concept is simple, you or an artist set up a page, and if you wish upload music to it. Follow the musicians of your choice, and everytime they post a new a new tune up it pops in your timeline.

Theres no room for updates like “thanks to everyone who came to the gig last night” its simply about the music and comments on that music.

The interface is also clean and simple. Listen to tracks with a big play button in front of a waveform of the music (see below), or if for some reason its not loaded click on the link underneath it. If the music has been made available as a free download you’ll see a little down arrow. Just click on it to download, no sign ups, no email addresses.

A few days ago one of the final pieces of music featuring the late great Gregory Issacs popped up in my timeline courtesy of Wrongtom.
Taken from the Dub Pistols Rehash LP, Tom heard about Issacs death as he was putting the finishing touches to his mix.

Kelpe is another act to add to any list of those to follow. Listen to tracks from his brand new EP “Margins“, the video for which was shot by Kelpe himself on Super-8 (Youtube).

Kel regularly updates his page with remixes he’s done for other acts or stonking new versions of his own material. The Zombie Zombie mix of Bread Machine Bred (below) is an incredible mix of one huge low down sleazily parping acid bassline with break outs of full on percussion crashing through the mix.

The other joy of Soundcloud is the ability to see what the bands you follow are listening to and loving themselves. A click onto Kelpe’s comments reveals a skilfully subtle reworking of Joanna Newsom’s “Cosmia” that had passed me by earlier in the year.

Sparse glitchy electronica, and gorgeous strings show off Joanna’s voice to fine effect.

Ever one to harness the powers of new technology, Akira The Don has been busy uploading every single tune, mixtape and remix he’s ever done to his Soundcloud page. Essential stuff, but ignore his Soundcloud for now and check out the relaunched version 5.0 of his justifiably self proclaimed “Best Artist Website in The World” – AkiraTheDon.com.

It took Akira’s bro’ Zef months to create, but every hour was worth it to create such an incredible mix of new music, cartoons, youtube clips, live radio and more. The standard has been well and truly set.

To celebrate the new site Akira was kidnapped by Joey2tits to make what started as a “simple” mixtape but ended as a fully fledged album. As usual it comes in a variety of combinations, downloads, tshirts and/0r physical release.

This week The Beatles finally came to itunes, and as befits one of the greatest bands in history they’re also all over Soundcloud. Just dont expect the straight album versions.

A.Skills put together an unbelievable 10 minute mega-mix of The Beatles and countless cover versions from Reggae to Hip-Hop. Originally aired on 1Xtra even hardened traditionalist Beatles fans would have to admire the skill involved in weaving interview segments and so many influences into the mix. A.Skills also has a Come Together remix high on the Soundcloud charts but it didnt really float my boat.

Far better is ScratchandSniffs re-edit of the Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder collaboration “Whats That You’re Doing“. Check their SoundCloud page for a whole host of tasty re-edits.

Star Slinger seem to be generating a real buzz of late, but they’ll probably upset a few Cocteau Twins fans with this reworking of “Heaven Or Las Vegas“.

Maybe not one for the purists but with its gorgeous vocals, stuttering beats, and spacey synths, its up there with and will be lapped up by fans of the finest output of Gold Panda, Baths, Various Production, and their ilk. Lovely!

Compiled from a shortlist of around a 1000 tracks through a process of demented indecision until “only” 200 remained.  Breathtakingly good tracks were chopped in fits of peak, and the order could still change at any time. The point is these lists are slightly point-less, but these 200 tunes have enriched my life over the last 12 months.  Besides half the fun of making charts is looking back at the previous editions of 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 and realising you shouldn’t be left in control of the car stereo, let alone pontificating on the finest musical output of the year. Declaring Beyonce’s “Single Ladies“ the 45th best of 08 is as far as I’m concerned excuse enough for you to all to leave now.

1. McAlmont and Nyman
“In Rai Don Giovanni”

All is not well with the musical universe when the glorious voice of David McAlmont is not present at the top of its table. Despite his phenomenal talent McAlmont’s career trajectory has been anything but smoothly ascendant, but in the unlikely form of Michael Nyman he may have finally found his perfect foil.
As this countries most celebrated contemporary composer you wouldn’t expect Nyman to struggle for inspiration but the pair only came together after discovering they shared a similar artistic block. Nyman needed words to spark his compositions to life, while McAlmont lacked the songs. The resulting album “The Glare” is the finest showcase for that unique voice since the first McAlmont & Butler longplayer way back in the mists of the 90′s.

Its no surprise that the project’s concept is suitably highbrow, how many LP’s take inspiration from the 19th century French painter Gericault? He saw his art as a documentary on canvas, telling the tale of news events of his time, sometimes in collaboration with people actually involved in the stories. McAlmont took this on by twinning some of Nyman’s finest works with lyrics written in the first person perspective of the subject of a current headline. So “Going To America” finds captured Somalian pirate Abdiwali Muse worrying about FBI agents and Navy seals, while the title track has Susan Boyle contemplating life as an overnight sensation.  Zimbabwe, Joanna Lumley and the Gurka’s… it all sounds painfully clunky as an idea but aside from a few tracks it works phenomenally well.  Its also worth reading McAlmonts blog on the lyrics with links to the headlines that inspired each song.

“In Rai Don Giovanni” gives Veronica Lario, the long suffering wife of ageing lothario and statue catcher Silvio Berlusconi a chance to tell her story. Despite first catching Silvio’s eye while stripping off in a play she eventually finds the “skinny blonde model’s” and “floozies younger than his kids” too much to bear and is off “to better things“.  Her or rather David’s voice declares all this in celebratory style, the music is bouncy and vibrant, strings pluck and horns parp as she throws off the shackles of a “shameless playboy pimp“. With the P of pimp emphasised with spitting indignation.

What better way to start 2010 than with David McAlmont back centre stage, in his pomp, overblown, exuberant, camp as hell but gloriously beguiling. Even better according to his twitter the pair have re-entered the studio to record a new track together.

2. Octave Mouret
“Locked Doors (feat. PolarBear)” (MP3)

“No one ever says that Im like you, but there are times when I’m frightened they might do”

Lyrics are often the songwriters neglected art, a catchy tune may stick in the head but the right turn of phrase can stop you in your tracks or send the mind spiralling.  As such when you stumble across a true wordsmith you tend to hold them tight (or in my case enthuse about them at length on a blog).

The current crop of poets, or at least those that stray from purely spoken word into music seem to be in a rich vein of form when it comes to matching jaw droppingly good lyrics with a decent tune.  Scroobius Pip returns with a new single “Get Better (YouTube)” in March and Kate Tempest’s Sound Of Rum LP was a highlight of last year, to name but two.  At the top of that tree sits Polar Bear, an act Ive plugged so much that as I said in a previous post I’m dangerously close to donning a ra-ra skirt, energetically thrusting pom poms in the air and demanding readers “Give me a P… give me an O“.

“Locked Doors” a collaboration with Octave Mouret is achingly beautiful, with deceptively simple deft production allowing the words due prominence.  PolarBear draws his stories from the ordinary, and the simple truth that there’s nothing more powerful or easy to relate to than everyday life.  In this case the father/son relationship, and dealing with a dad who mostly isn’t there. The words are defiant yet laced with damage, the son may never “google his name, or sit on night buses wondering where he is” but the pity for the fathers loss can’t help but reflect back… “If I ever put even one foot into your shoes, I have people who’ll stop me“.    As with all of PolarBear’s work its deeply affective, brilliantly judged and has more in common with Mike Leigh or Jimmy McGovern than any songwriter I know.

He’s always got several projects on the go at any one time so I’d recommend signing up for his mailing list to keep uptodate, or Twitter, although that mostly features the amusing things a son says to his dad.
PolarBears latest major piece is a collaboration with BAC called “Return” in which an entire film is conjured up and imagined through spoken work. The run starts in March, snap up your tickets here (I will be).

3. Moodymann
“Freeki Mutha F cker” (MP3)

“you don’t even like this song, you just dig the hook”

With its rumbling bass, subtle keys and whispered fruitiness “Freeki MF” is the sound of a pre-Jehovah Prince getting upto no good with some early Chicago/Detroit house. Riding a spartan backing Moodymann throatily intones his tale of voyeurism while the lady in his sights sighs and coo’s at his every line.
It’s probably the most sexually charged record since Lil Louis’s peak or at least since Prince released the Scandalous Sex suite, a 25 minute recording of his seduction of Kim Bassinger. Thankfully its a far better record than listening to half an hour of Prince & Kim shagging, but like Scandalous it has a comical quality. You can whisper the line “You used to ride the bus, today you took the train” in as gravely a voice as you like but it’ll raise a laugh before anything else.

One of the finest records of the year even if it does swing wildly across the lines of steaminess, comedy and creepiness.
In the interests of accuracy I should point out that I’ve discovered this actually came out in Dec 08, and has been a live favourite since 2005.

4. Terry Lynn
“IMF” (MP3)

“There will not be a good future for the rich, if there is no prospect of a better future for the poor”

A critique of the IMF’s systematic destruction of the Jamaican economy as told through the medium of a stonking great pop reggae anthem.  It doesnt matter that as a sheltered speaker of our Queens English I cant understand half of what Terry is saying, the chorus is still cutting yet unbelievably catchy.
The IMF’s mantra of liberalize, privatise and deregulate is infamous, and its bullying of countries like Jamaica into selling their assets in return for access to loans has been the subject of entire documentaries. The award winning 2001 film “Life & Debt” examined what the Jamaican Prime Minister called the “imperialist” actions of the IMF. Its available to watch online, and features the speech by IMF Director Horst Kohler sampled by Terry on this track.

5. The XX

Aside from the obligatory Animal Collective, The XX were probably the most blogged about band of 2009. Unlike the Animal Collective however they broke through into the mainstream aided by a huge marketing spend from their label XL.  Three or four promos were sent to me alone, posters plastered the tube, and it worked as critics applauded and the kind of people who buy their CD’s at Tesco bought into the band.  That may sound outlandishly snobby, but on several occasions people I know who have never expressed any particular love for music beyond Radio 2 blasted out The XX and evangelised wildly on their behalf.   And the reason beyond the hype and the major label? Its quite a simply a bloody good album.

“VCR” is the poppiest and lightest of the albums tunes, a simple love song about “watching films” together with the musical accompaniment of little more than a bass and sweet xylophone.   I could in truth have picked four or five off the disc as my favourite, without even going into all the fine remixes on offer (eg Pariahs fantastic “Basic Space”).
Recently I attended xx: A Sculpture of the Album,  a “3D physical interpretation” in a large empty storeroom beneath Soho’s Phonica records.  It’s a decent idea, with three pillars, each containing a video performance from one band member and depending where you stand the mix of the album changes.  I can’t say I was exactly bowled over by the experience but the visit did offer an opportunity for a bit of banter with my brother over the merits of The XX.
In his eyes the sparse sound of The XX is not beautifully simple, its just simple full stop.  All the tracks fairly similar and unremarkable… its just pleasant.  The debate concluded with my brother insisting he made sounds like the XX when he first tried to play a guitar.  He confidently stated he could therefore easily toss off an XX LP in an afternoon.  Needless to say I didnt agree but I’ve offered to pay for the release of this LP should he be able to deliver on his bold claim!

6. Talen
“The Vibes – A Sizzla Tale” (MP3)

Winterthur, Switzerland – Not the first place that comes to mind when imagining hotbeads of 21st century Reggae sounds.  Ok, old Pipecock Jackxon aka Lee “Scratch” Perry made Zurich his home but the 2 DJ’s/2 Producer’s team going by the name Talen should put Switzerland on the reggae map.
Dancehall meets dubstep with an absolute thumping bass drum made fiercer still by ragga royalty Sizzla booming his love of “Reggae music“.
The track works especially well when played very loudly on motorways (I havent tested it on A roads). Many long journeys out West were accompanied by me hitting continual repeat on this “Talen Sound“.

For decades record companies have used remixes as a marketing tool. Major acts would commission a variety of remixes to appeal to the various scenes… “right this new Sting track is amazing but we’d like a pop mix, a northern dance round the handbag club mix, a hip-hop take, and a credible electronic version please“… “oh and make sure you use all the current big name DJ’s“. Before Gallup tightened the rules, remixes could be spread out over multiple editions of singles to force completist fans to buy every format and boost chart positions.
Now that no one buys physical single releases anymore the role of the remix has changed once again. Take Little Boots, the Sound of 2009 or one might harshly say the sound of hype before the substance is quite there. Tipped to the heavens for greatness by people who I swear had only heard one track, if that. Lukewarm album reviews and sales followed, and now the new single “Earthquake” is being promoted with a mass of remixes. My inbox contains 5 or more versions, all with the official ok to disseminate at will.
Thats not to say Little Boots won’t go on to great success or to single her out, everyone is at it. Indeed over the last 6 weeks I reckon I’ve bought, stumbled across or been sent over 250 different remixes. Fortunately out of those I’ve listened to, about 50 are pretty damn good which is not a bad strike rate.

So in a lazy attempt to kick start my blogging habit I thought I’d go through a few goodies.

After being a little harsh about her I’ll start with Little Boots, and a mix by the pastmasters of the dance anthem, The Stonemasons. Their reworking of “Earthquake” hits the button marked 90′s pop dance, harking back to the type of treatment the Brothers In Rhythm used to serve up.

It’s the kind of wonderful pop froth that Kylie, Madonna, Britney, and Little Boots herself totally failed to deliver all year.

From the Sound of 09 to a group sure to be on the tipsters lips for the dawning of the <insert whatever the next decade’s going to be called>. Clock Opera’s debut 7″ is available from the ever excellent Puregroove records, but it wont be long before the major labels come calling. Last month I managed to miss seeing them play live three times in one week. Something I intend to put right in the new year.

CLOSE TO THE EDIT

Before delving into any more remixes lets quickly turn to the “Edit”. This blog has waffled at length about the re-edit, ie chopping up, reordering, lengthening a song rather than necessarily remixing it. The Edit had its peak in the disco era but has undergone something of a renaissance of late thanks to the likes of Greg Wilson.

Recently an edit appeared on my harddrive that may actually take the crown of “my favourite of all time“. I say “appeared” because I cant for the life of me remember where it came from.
Tim H & Pablosounds edit of Arthur Russell’s first crack at “Dance” music “Kiss Me Again” is nothing short of phenomenal. Recorded in 1978 under the pseudonym of Dinosaur the 14 minute long original is famously bonkers, featuring cello, a disco diva, piano, horns and an off the hook guitar courtesy of Talking Heads David Byrne. To get a flavour of the track read the perfect description by Mr.Disco on his blog.

While searching for more information on the people responsible for the re-edit I came across a discussion of the tracks various mixes in which “Tim” explains his version.

“Somewhere amongst all the versions there is a KILLER track struggling to make itself heard.
That edit me and PabloSound did a couple of years back was based on the 12.42 ‘Kiss Me Again (Version)’ , off the red vinyl promo. That’s my favourite rendition, but we had to chop it up a lot to get it into a sensible structure.”

Of course no discussion of Edits would be complete without a mention of Greg Wilson. I won’t worship at his feet for long but mention should be made of his arrival into the world of SoundCloud. SoundCloud is the latest buzz site for musicians and fans to share music. No self respecting artist is without one it seems. It offers control over downloads or streaming, a lovely interface, and most importantly listeners to your track can annotate the sound wave with remarks like “that snare is dope man!!!“.

Greg’s SoundCloud is packed full of exclusive mixes, and lots of his legendary edits. All free to download, some of which, like the Elektrons edit below were previously only available on one-sided 12″.

POP WILL EAT ITSELF

There are certain darlings of the blog remix world who’s latest knob-twiddle is guaranteed to shoot up the hype machine. Don Diablo for example is actually a team of eight people who work in continuous shifts so as to supply 17 remixes a day to the inboxes of eager music bloggers.

Hailing from New York, the trio Lemonade are currently causing a storm both as artists and as in demand re-mixers. Thankfully they don’t operate a sausage factory policy and although prolific the quality level rarely drops. Glasser, aka Cameron Mesirow is one to benefit from Lemonade’s golden touch. Usually she employs her voice as an instrument perhaps like Kate Bush meets Bobby McPherrin, except that sounds like a bad thing! Check out her myspace to hear what I mean, but Lemonade strip the track down, lock it in an echo chamber and emerge with what reminds me of the Guy Called Gerald classic “Voodoo Ray“, and I do mean its that good! Beautiful in fact.

The XX are another band who not content with releasing one of the finest albums of the year still find the time to not only sneak out the odd remix, but hit the proverbial ball out of the park. Theyre even capable of feats of musical alchemy turning Jack Penate into certifiable gold.

COVER ME
Aside from getting yourself a snazzy remix, another way for a new band to get a bit of attention is the cover version. Preferably by a bloggers favourite so at the very least you show up on the hype machine when fans search for a free copy of their favourite bands new single.
It can be a dangerous tactic, if your covers terrible you risk the ire of people who spend far too much time sitting at a computer. Get it too right, or too good, and youre in danger of becoming The Futureheads.

One band who seem to have mastered the art of self-promotion though irresistible covers are Rachael, Mike and Matt, collectively known as Run Toto Run. Armed only with Rachaels digital camera, a set of angel wings and a couple of animal heads, their Passion Pit cover version charmed 80,000 Youtube viewers.
Now theyve repeated the trick with another beautiful cover, this time of Bombay Bicycle Club. They also have a single out, and new material on myspace from their forthcoming LP. One listener was so impressed by what he heard he offered to buy the band a PA system.

Marina & The Diamonds opted for getting others to cover their new single. So far so mundane you might say but how about by a 20ish piece all girl choir going by the name of Gaggle?!

Jah Wobble has been in the game too long to be accused of doing a cover for attentions sake. You can imagine Mr Wobble decided to cover “Get Carter” for his own merry idiosyncratic reasons. He remains one of the finest Bassists alive, and his Chinese Dub Orchestra LP has been collecting “world” music awards.

As always with any list it’s a personal choice so please feel free to leave a comment along the lines of “you don’t know the first thing about music“. In truth any of the top 20 could on a different day or mood been No.1 and everytime I look I end up wanting to push the No. 89 up to 35.

1. GONZALES – ‘Working Together (Akira The Don Remix)’ (MP3)
“I’m signed up with Hackney Freecycle… I got a free fishtank… its delightful”

In the process of compiling this list most of the top ten were at some point pencilled in as my favourite of the year. Each has its own merits as No.1 whether it’s my most listened to, the one with the best song writing or maybe the most innovative. All good reasons but in the end I opted for this simple question “Which track made you happiest?” and to that there is only one answer: Gonzo & Akira.

Misery’s not an option when listening to the stomping piano of Gonzales coupled with the wit and infectious enthusiasm of Akira The Don’s raps. On his blog Akira says he “got all excited” when he heard Gonzo’s new tune and spent the next day remixing it.
Akira always writes the most hilariously quotable raps and “Working Together” is no exception. It takes in everything from how good Freecycle is to his girlfriend pointing out the lack of space for a pig in their flat!

If you bookmark only one blog make it Akira’s for exclusive MP3′s, a superb free mixtape, video’s, comic strips, and of course the “Thanks For All The AIDS” tshirt – the man is a god damn one man multimedia empire! In his latest post he even manages to pen the most eloquent tribute to Tony Hart I’ve read. (RIP Tony).

Akira also joined Gonzales on stage to perform the remix live back in May, and were it not for seeing Kraftwerk in a Polish steel factory, it may have been my gig of the year. Look out for “A fuck-off massive pop album” from Akira soon and if you keep an eye on the blog he’ll probably rope you into singing on it.

Forget Little Boots, if there’s any justice, 09 will be the year of the Don.

2. JULIAN COPE
‘All The Blowing-Themselves-Up Motherfuckers (Will Realise The Minute They Die That They Were Suckers)’ (MP3)

Self styled arch-drude (half druid/half dude) Julian Cope vanished off my radar in the 20 years between watching him perform “World Shut Your Mouth” on TOTP’s in 1986 and 2007′s “You Gotta Problem With Me“. What was Cope doing in that time??? Oh only releasing a dozen or so albums, numerous side projects, a book on Japrock, two epic five-hundred page guidebooks to Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments and a BBC 2 documentary to match. So…I didn’t miss much then!!

Leaving aside the current butchery of hundreds of Palestinian’s, Cope manages to sum up the idiocy of Islamic Extremism in one admittedly very wordy but sing-along chorus of…”All The Blowing Themselves Up Motherfuckers will realise the minute they die that they were suckers“. It’s quite simply the best pop song about suicide bombers ever.
The “Black Sheep” album is quality from start to finish, with even a b-side on British history making StopMe’s Top 100 of the year.

3. DOC BROWN
‘Blighty (feat. Natalie Williams)’ (MP3)
“You stay in my veins like the Smith in my name… from this tiny little island that I came”

Hidden away on Hip-Hop Connection’s cover CD “Blighty” turns the history of Black Britain into a love song – a stormy love but love nevertheless. Natalie Williams provides the beautiful chorus that at appears based on the standard “troubled relationship”… it could be Rhianna’s latest until Doc Brown subverts the norm with his insightful rap.

When I originally posted the track I mused on just why I found it impossible to listen to without getting tingles down my spine. Looking back my summation that I was clearly “a soft Guardian reading, humous eating namby pamby liberal who sees London as some kind of multi-cultural playground where the worlds people join hands and skip happily to work everyday” seems fairly accurate.

‘Blighty’ is proof that glossy production can’t trump honest emotion. The strings may sound like they were done on the D10 keyboard I’ve got in my loft but who cares when a track has a simple power to move. Sadly if his myspace is to be believed Doc Brown has now ‘retired’ from music to concentrate on a career as a standup comic!

I’d love to hear a ‘Blighty’ remix project featuring guest verses from other UK rappers like Ty.

4. JOHN FAIRHURST – ‘Obnox Stomp’ (MP3)

The sound of the spirit of Django Reinhardt, Ravi Shanker, Bukka White, and Nick Drake all channelled through the body of a humble soul from Wigan, John Fairhurst. Thanks must go to John’s dad for introducing him to slide blues at an early age. He was also a late comer to Indian classical music, getting in K.Sridhar at the age of 8 (an age at which my tastes were more Shaky than Sridar).

Humble Soul may not put out many records but you can guarantee everyone they do is just that little bit special, and Fairhurst’s “Joys Of Spring” is no exception. Each track is totally different to the last, taking the listener on an acoustic guitar powered world tour. The Blues bar romp of “Obnox Stomp” is the pick of the bunch with its foot stomping beat, furious guitar and wheezing mouth organ. If Clint Eastwood ever returns to Westerns this should be the soundtrack… so good it makes me want to dig out a two-tone brown waistcoat and matching chaps.

5. PLASTIC LITTLE

“I was raised middle class, and I love my life”

Plastic Little are like Digital Underground on speed, larger than life comic book rap, fearless of boundaries of either the sonic or taste and decency kind.
“Thug” features a gloriously upbeat squelching beat, mad “ahhh, ahhh” chants and the unrepentant joys of being a middle class rapper. ‘I’m at your house-party, Tiger Woods… he’s my nigger!”

Does anyone have the lyrics to this? I’d love to work out what he says about why women love the marzipan he keeps in the cupboard of the home he shares with his invalid grandmother!?

6. ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS

“I need another world, This one’s nearly gone”

Songs about the environment are rare and listenable ones rarer still. Antony however takes the simple approach of listing everything he’s going to miss “the snow, the beach, things that grow“. Doesn’t sound that good does it? But with the barest piano accompaniment Antony’s voice produces a sound and mood that is as indescribably beautiful as the vanishing natural world it mourns.

Hegarty’s performance of ‘Another World‘ with the London Symphony Orchestra last year was one of the most magical moments of all the times I’ve seen him live. The orchestra provided muted almost inaudible but spine tingling backing while Antony stood in near darkness, invisible but for his utterly unique voice cutting clearly through the still air of the Barbican. Not bad for a man dressed in a roman toga, and who later transformed Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” into a mesmerising torch song (Check that out here).

7. DJ REVOLUTION

“I’ll be spitting this way past 60”

DJ Revolution puts the blast back in the Blast Master Krs-One as they rage at wack DJ’s, MP3′s, Sorato and people who don’t do it simply for the love of hip-hop. Their initial anger is mostly expressed through the medium of saying “shit” a lot, e.g. “I gotta pay you to play my shit, my shits already hot, so I aint got to pay for shit”

It’s a complete joy to hear the distinctive delivery of one of hip-hop’s iconic figures back at his best and bellowing “stand-up for the culture, don’t just grab a cheque!“

An orchestral sample of huge proportions drives the track along giving Kris the perfect base to deliver his 10 commandments for DJ’s.

8. ROOTS MANUVA

Roots Manuva is as English as tea, fish & chips, and self deprecation, and as if to illustrate the fact “Again and Again’s” video is set on a cricket field. Watching it now I’m starting to wish I’d picked the bouncing reggae lilt of the single version over Matt Monkey’s dubbish buzzing remix.

I’ll stick to my guns though and declare that Matt Helder’s dub chamber version shows just how much the Arctics truly know and love hip hop and reggae. The first time I saw them at the tiny Islington Bar Academy they took to the stage to the deafening thump of Dr. Dre. On Rodney’s last album the Super Furries turned in one of the best mixes and the indie remixer policy has paid dividends again.

Can I start a campaign for either a Manuva knighthood or for his face to replace the Queen on notes as the face of the UK?

9. ALVA NOTO

“Diecisiete, Nueve”

Mathematics meets the dancefloor with poet Anne-James Chaton reciting numbers corresponding to the principle of the golden ratio. Wikipedia helpfully explains that “Two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio between the sum of those quantities and the larger one is the same as the ratio between the larger one and the smaller“. Got that?

Whatever formula Noto uses it works, take coldly delivered monotone numbers, add the whir and clatter of electronics and finally divide and conquer with a thumping kick drum. All this equals one stunning track.

10. PAUL HEATON
‘Everything Is Everything’ (MP3)
“Feminism’s fast asleep with a cock in either hand”

Thankfully the demise of The Beautiful South (due to “musical similarities”) was merely a fresh start for Paul Heaton and his wonderfully acerbic lyrics. “Everything Is Everything” is what happens when the finest lyricist of the last 25 years sits down and lists all the things that annoy him… and simply can’t stop.

It was originally performed as a poem by the legend that is Bootsy Collins for fellow ex-Housemartin Fatboy Slim’s “Late Night Tales” compilation. Heaton takes a full seven minutes to get the diatribe off his chest, bemoaning “5 and 75 year olds worrying about their figure” although in a recent interview Paul claimed he cant sing angrily without “starting to sound like Ronan Keating having a tantrum. It doesn’t work at all.”

“Flowers bloom and die, since you said your goodbye”

A glorious slice of melancholy from King Midas and a contender for remix of the year. Dabrye creates a gold standard for downbeat modern soul with electronic washes, subtle chords and the most inspired sample since Diplo peppered the chorus of M.I.A’s “Paper Planes” with gunshots.

Just as adding the sound of bullets firing transformed “Paper Planes” from great track to classic, Dabrye’s use of Derrick May’s “Interval 1” transform this song (the original was a “sound interlude” on the essential detroit techno compilation “Relics“) .  As Ill-ec-tro-nic perfectly puts it “the soaring pitch-bending strings that are May’s hallmark sound.. elevate this track to the stratosphere.”

The new sound builds on the classic Electribe 101 template, so there’s a definite place for songwriting, but also a dry wit and intelligence you don’t often find in the pop charts.  Their press release jokes that the group started as an ambient project before they decided “f…ck this, and wrote the kind of songs that moved them in cerebral as well as booty shaking ways.” “I’m not Simone Choule” certainly comes under the cerebral tag inspired by Polanski’s “The Tenant“.  Solheim provides a perfectly judged backdrop for Billie Ray MArtins plaintive voice, referencing Kraftwerk to such an extent that some synth swoops had me searching the memory banks to recall what ‘werk track it borrowed. Someone even turned up in a “I’m not Simone Choule” tshirt!

Brassica’s album “Microvictories” is limited to 200 copies and comes in a beautiful screen-printed, hand-stamped and sewn sleeve. Each numbered copy also includes ten mini artworks by ten artists interpreting a track each. Such care and thought has been lavished on the release that if you buy a copy Tartaruga actually send out one of their employees cradling the CD on a cushion direct to your front door!*

With all that in mind I put the actual CD on with some trepidation.. “please don’t let the music be terrible, I really WANT to like this!”

Thankfully the music – which is what matters after all – lives up to the high standard set by it’s painstakingly created packaging. It ranges from beautiful ambient electronica, found sound collages, almost pop-ish melodies through to the clattering “Welcome (a piss in the river)” with it’s driving bass line.

All kinds of samples, sounds and experiments are lovingly woven into the mix, with new elements being revealed to the repeated listener. While some of the more “out-there” glitchy machine noise found sound tracks may try the patience of the kind of people who think ambient or electronica means “Cafe Del Mar” there’s a well judged mix between the more experimental end and lush beauty at the other.

It all marks Brassica, his label Tartaruga and the Brassica Fuzzpedal blog as ones to watch, listen to and love.

Put off by Celine Dion promo CD’s, obscure opening hours, and over eager traffic wardens I’ve neglected my trusty PO Box a little of late. As such a modest pile had built up when I finally illegally parked the Micra and grabbed my mail.
In an age of MP3′s and zshare it’s a bit of an oddity that people still actually use old fashioned mail, but there’s something about a person taking the trouble to lick the stamp, and physically send you a CD that compels you to listen, far more than a copy and pasted email, with “Hi Music like dirt, been loving your site for ages now, here’s the latest from my <insert musical genre I’ve never ever featured here> band“.
Don’t get me wrong, an emailed MP3 is still the quickest way to get a listen, but only a physical copy gives you guilt trips for not getting round to doing so.

BRASSICA

Pick of the last post box has to be “Microvictories” the debut album by London sound sculptor Brassica. Its out on Tartaruga records, a label you can’t help but warm to such is their attention to detail and thirst for quirky new ideas.
Interested in the music but dont want to part with a tenner straight away? Sign up to their lending library service. Register on the website and you’ll receive the full CD, lush packaging and all, to try for a week. It comes with a library card to fill in your details and the date, then when the weeks up all you pay is the postage and the effort of popping it into the post to the next library user.

Microvictories is limited to 200 copies and comes in a beautiful screen-printed, hand-stamped and sewn sleeve. Each numbered copy also includes ten mini artworks by ten artists interpreting a track each. Such care and thought has been lavished on the release that if you buy a copy Tartaruga actually send out one of their employees cradling the CD on a cushion direct to your front door!*

With all that in mind I put the actual CD on with some trepidation.. “please don’t let the music be terrible, I really WANT to like this!”

Thankfully the music – which is what matters after all – lives up to the high standard set by it’s painstakingly created packaging. It ranges from beautiful ambient electronica, found sound collages, almost pop-ish melodies through to the clattering “Welcome (a piss in the river)” with it’s driving bass line.

All kinds of samples, sounds and experiments are lovingly woven into the mix, with new elements being revealed to the repeated listener. While some of the more “out-there” glitchy machine noise found sound tracks may try the patience of the kind of people who think ambient or electronica means “Cafe Del Mar” there’s a well judged mix between the more experimental end and lush beauty at the other.

It all marks Brassica, his label Tartaruga and the Brassica Fuzzpedal blog as ones to watch, listen to and love.

LEE PERRY

As the above archive 80′s clip from “Jools (Holland) in Jamaica” shows, Lee “Scratch” Perry has been… shall we say quirky for more than a few decades now. His position as one of the most important figures in the history of reggae music is however unquestionable.

Andrew W.K. met Perry at SXSW back in 2006, and an unlikely friendship developed leading ultimately to W.K becoming the latest producer to try and deliver a coherent album from the enigmatic legend. It features a long list of helping hands from Moby, Blondie’s Chris Stein, and Don Fleming and it might just be Perry’s best album since “Battle of Armagideon“.

“Get it out the cock, piss in Iraq”

The first single “Pum Pum” returns to Perry’s first love… no not reggae music but ladies bits, he’s not called Doctor Dick for nothing. Elsewhere he sounds as contemporary as he has in years without it sounding fake. “Reggae Man” updates the classic reggae sound to fine effect, “Party Time” ensures just that, “Fire” is builds gradually into trippy overload and “Chooga Cane” has a marvellous electro riff running throughout. Then there’s “Santa Claus” a disco beat featuring feedback rock guitar, hand claps, Perry going on about Mickey Mouse and a high pitched woman screeching “Santa Claus”!! Its actually madder than that sounds.

This being Perry there are of course moments of self indulgence but Andrew WK has done an incredible job coaxing a quality album out of The Upsetter this side of the Millennium. Over the years I’ve bought countless frankly terrible Perry albums, but with over half a dozen tracks that’ll have you hitting repeat, Repentance wont join those gathering dust on my record shelves.

NIKESH SHUKLA

Nikesh Shukla is a writer, rapper and Saved By the Bell enthusiast caught between the cityscapes of Bombay and the green and pleasant land of London or so his press release says. More importantly he’s got a track out called “Damon Albarn’s A Pompous Cunt” which should be worth a listen for the title alone? Does Nikesh get away with such a deliberately headline grabbing title?

I can’t help but agree with the sentiment myself – he undoubtedly is – but you can’t deny the man keeps delivering great songs, pomposity and all. Check out the title sequence of the BBC’s Olympic coverage featuring Damon’s monkey – Brilliant!
While having a quck nosey round the net I also stumbled across an excellent interview Nikesh did with “one of the best rappers around” Immortal Technique.

Regan Farquhar, otherwise known as Bus Driver can no longer be counted as a “newcomer”, being on album number five, not to mention countless collaborations since he first appeared peddling his own cd-r’s in 1999. What he does have however is the energy and ideas of the new kid on the block. This far down the line and “Casting Agents and Cowgirls” is bursting at the seams with words, hooks, and his trademark lyrical flourishes.
Few carry off the trick of marrying clever, cutting or thought provoking lyrics to an impossibly catchy song, you usually get one or the other.
In many ways its the close relative to OutKasts “Hey Ya” in that it crosses the line that separates hip hop (especially less commercial hiphop) from the shelves packed with X-Factor winners and James Bluntalikes. That universal appeal that comes with a guarantee to have people who claim to hate “hip-hop” dancing as if someone had dropped an E in their cuppa. While at the same time singing lines like “poised with sex toys in your penthouse suite believing you’re Lou Reed” as if following a bouncing Karaoke ball.

2. James Yorkston

One of the standout tracks from his 2006 album, “Woozy” is a gorgeously self deprecating spoken word piece that sleepily describes a life spent “Woozy With Cider“. Joking about his album peaking at number 172, and observing that “the world is not exactly going to… make me rich using my songs in adverts selling oranges or lemons“. Given that vegan Yorkston once turned down £10,000 for one of his songs to be used in an advert for butter, he may be right (although that story maybe an urban myth?).

The Jon Hopkins remix comes from a promo CD I picked up for 2 quid in Berwick Street’s “Record & Tape Exchange”. Hopkins strips the track back to just a piano and in the process achieves the almost impossible feat of making it even more chillingly gorgeous. Researching Hopkins (otherwise known as putting his name into google) I discovered he also produced another favourite of mine, King Creosote’s “Admiral” which features elsewhere in this best of. King Creosote also has a remix of “Woozy” on this CD which is equally as good as Hopkins’ take. Who knew alt-folk was so incestuous?

No.3 in the chart and an early debut for a phrase that may get a few airings… “can I change my mind… this should’ve been No.1!”. The undoubted highlight from her Kala LP, Paper Planes was the closest 2007 had to an anthem, even though its not even out as a single till March (the DFA & Diplo mixes just landed on my doormat this morning ).
A loop from The Clash’s “Straight To Hell” forms the base while MIA’s fairly random lyrics work a treat and the sweet as sugar children’s choir chorus is wonderfully subverted with gunshots and cash machines.
It’s worth a listen to the original version (see below as posted on Diplo’s fantastic Mad Decent blog) which features a gun shot/cash machine free chorus (MP3).

Who’d have thought adding a couple of sound effects could transform a track from average to anthem! Genius production.
Apparently MIA was less than impressed the gunshots were hamfistedly removed from her Letterman performance (YouTube), while MTV have also wielded the scissors.

A disastrous year for Adele who began 2007 on top of the world having topped this blogs “Top 100 of 06″ list. Fast forward 12 months and she finds herself with merely the 6th best tune all year… where did it all go wrong?

On the upside she’s won a Brit, been proclaimed as THE act for 08 in every magazine or newspaper published so far this year, and the BBC seems to have decided that she must be featured at least daily somewhere on Aunties outlets. The hype around her is unbelievable, but for once every piece of breathless praise is totally 100% justified (although the debut “proper” single is my least favourite track so far).

London has had its fair share of love songs over the years but rarely as beautiful as “Hometown Glory“. As Adele skips the cracks in the pavement, her chorus soars over the piano proclaiming all the wonders of this world… a woman asks if she is lost, “no and thank you madam, I ain’t lost, just wandering“. The lyrics “I love it in the city when two worlds collide“, or “Shows that we’re united, shows that we ain’t gonna take it” could be taken as a tribute to the multiculturalism of the capital, or as a rebuttal to the London bombings. Alternatively just listen, draw your own conclusions, your own meanings, and enjoy that shiver down the spine.

Early leaks and the one track per artist rule robs Ronson of a higher placing. His Smiths “Stop Me” cover was according to my itunes the track I listened to most this year, but unfortunately ive played it so much I got a bit sick of it. If this list had been done in May it would have been a cast iron cert for No.1.

“Valerie” is that rare example of a cover being better than the original, with Winehouse taking time out from self destruction to provide a killer vocal performance. The Ronson sound certainly does what it says on the tin, ie ape 60′s motown, but when it all comes together in a magical track like this you forget the crimes against music he and Robbie Williams carried out elsewhere on the album. The guy fitting my new windows was just bellowing the chorus of this out at the top his lungs half an hour ago, while equally it wouldn’t sound out of place in the trendiest of clubs.
