FINGERSNAP – BLACKBIRDS

The enchanting falsetto of David McAlmont is responsible for some of the most life affirming, moving music of the last 20 years. The partners in crime change but every decade has at least one classic McAlmont tune. “Yes” (with Bernard Butler) is an undisputed tear jerking 90’s anthem, in the naughties his collaboration with Michael Nyman breathed life into tabloid headlines to spine tingling effect. Now as one half of Fingersnap (with Guy Davies) it’s time for this decade’s masterpiece, “Blackbirds”.

McAlmont describes the record as “an accidental creation” that “emerged from a despairing place“, and you can download it for free until August 18th. To nab your free Blackbirds MP3, sign up to Fingersnaps’ official mailing list on their website or use the widget below.

CHAMBERLAIN – SILK COLLECTION SPECIAL EDIT

Somehow Parisian piano wizard Chamberlain remains relatively unknown despite an ever expanding catalogue of gorgeous tunes. Silk Collection Special Edit is housier than much of his output which usually leans more towards the finest film soundtrack album you’ve never heard.

GOAT – HIDE FROM THE SUN

Those Swedish psychedelic prog’s Goat are back in September to attempt the tricky task of following up their all conquering debut “World Music”. “Hide from the sun” bodes well. Commune will be released on September 22 – pre-order the record from Rocket here.

BLUEPRINT – PERSPECTIVE

“Thirty afghans killed at a family wedding
Sixty Iraki killed trying to vote
A woman gets gang-raped down in India
Five kids’ lifes get ended by a drone
I don’t care if you living in a high-rise
You’re no different from a man in a hut”

Blueprint has one of those deep baritone hip hop voices like Rakim that imparts his words with added gravitas, not that his words need extra weight, dealing as they often do with the bleaker end of life. Perspective takes the relatively simple message that there’s always someone worse off than you and to have a little perspective.

MIKILL PANE – ‘FULL CLIP’

A word of warning, the video for Mikill Pane’s Full Clip starts with him spunking over a pineapple before setting off to unload over half of London so maybe dont watch it at work! But dont let a gallon of jizz put you off the music, Full Clip shares the savvy ability Mike Skinner had in his early years to combine commercial hooks and proper songwriting while retaining credibility and smoking of edge. You get the impression Pane could be huge any time he feels like it (actually given the video that sounds vaguely filthy but you get what I mean).

NehruvianDOOM – OM

HipHop heavyweight DOOM meets newcomer Bishop Nehru with the first taste from a rumored full length collaboration.

FYFE – FOR YOU (Deptford Goth Remix)

Deptford Goth gets the echo chamber out to turn Fyfe’s “For You” into an absolutely sumptuous tune that recalls the electronic soul of James Mathe’s Barbarossa. Absolutely lovely sax too.

PERFUME GENIUS – ‘QUEEN’

MILO – ALMOND MILK PARADISE

FRANKO FRAIZE – UNDERDOG
